Pest control for the green house

At Priddis Valley Gardens, we are always looking to make our green house as natural and environmentally responsible as possible.

It is our policy not to use pesticides or chemicals. Instead we opt for a more natural approach.

But, how can you control those annoying bugs that feast on desirable plants without spraying insecticides?

Easy! Releasing natural predators is an approach that works very well for us. It is a simple pest control strategy you can follow in your green house as well.

Timing:
I tend to release these “desirable” bugs in May and continue to introduce them all summer long. It’s amazing how this simple measure can leave the green house pest-free, which contributes to stronger, healthier plants.

Please call prior to May if you want to join us for the release of these bugs, at which time we can provide some for your greenhouse. This usually takes place in the early evening, and is usually a fun event.

Bedding plants and hanging baskets.

Annual plants only live for a single season (going from seed to bloom and back to seed). While our time with them is fleeting, their beauty can immensely enrich our lives.

They are typically planted in flower beds, potted, or arrange in hanging baskets to showcase their beauty and striking color. Annuals can also be strategically planted amidst shrubs and grasses. They can be the perfect complement to perennials. Not to mention, annuals can be cut fresh for fragrant bouquets.

Annuals give gardeners a great deal of flexibility. The look and feel of a garden, deck or porch can change from year to year. You can pick plants based on how you’re feeling, an instantly create an effect that strikes you mood (maybe last year you liked shades of blue; this year you’re captivated by yellows reds and oranges). Plus, you can stage plants based on the time of year they bloom.

Herbs: a natural fit in any garden! What is a herb?

It is not as straightforward as you may think. According to the British Royal Horticultural Society’s definition, a herb is a plant whose stem dies at the end of season. Huh?

I prefer the explanation given in the Oxford dictionary. It defines herbs as plants whose leaves and flowers and stems are used for medicine, and scent or flavour.

Today, people are now looking at herbs in a new light. Many see herbs playing a vital role in a healthier approach to our living. Herbs are one of the most beneficial groups of plants, as they attract butterflies and bees to gardens and vegetable plots. This naturally increases pollination, which in turn promotes growth. Herbs are probably best known and most widely used in cooking for intensifying the taste. Dill, cilantro, basil mint, thyme and chives just a few of the common herbs people enjoy growing themselves. In recent years, a growing number of people have even making their own essence
